President Biden's updated emissions goal seeks to drastically reduce greenhouse gases and support a sustainable future.
In December 2024, President Joe Biden announced an ambitious goal for the United States to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 61% to 66% by 2035, based on 2005 levels. This updated target expands on a previously set 50% to 52% reduction target for 2030. The new goal is part of a broader set of climate initiatives as the U.S. works to accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy.
The new emissions reduction target will be formally submitted to the United Nations Climate Change secretariat as part of the U.S.'s next nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement. This commitment aligns with Biden's continued push toward achieving net-zero emissions economy-wide by 2050. In addition, the administration aims for a 35% reduction in methane emissions by 2035, addressing a key climate concern due to methane's significant contribution to global warming.
Experts from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) have praised the new goal as realistic and achievable, emphasizing the benefits of federal and state clean energy policies. These policies have contributed to a clean energy boom, creating new jobs and enhancing U.S. economic competitiveness in the global market.
However, concerns remain about whether these targets can be met with current policies, as noted by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). Achieving the GHG reductions requires greater commitment across various sectors, including energy, transportation, and industry, along with robust state and local actions.
The Biden administration's new target serves as a blueprint for the future, especially with shifting political landscapes, signaling that while challenges remain, a cleaner, more sustainable energy future is within reach.
