Presidential Election 2024: Voting Info & Candidates

With early voting rising, Americans rush to find polling places amid a tight presidential race.

As Election Day approaches, Google searches for "Where to vote" have seen a significant spike, highlighting a surge in civic engagement among American voters. With Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump locked in a closely contested race, this increase in search activity suggests that many citizens are eager to ensure their voices are heard in what is expected to be a pivotal election.

A growth in polling location search queries is a hopeful indicator of interest in participating but also creates some questions on why voters are seeking that much information so close to an election. Some reasons could include recent changes in the locations of polling sites in the states and discussions concerning the access of voting. Despite this, however, the increased searches are a positive indicator, especially among first-time voters, who are not familiar with the process.

An outlier of this election cycle has been early voting, wherein more than 78 million Americans have already voted. University of Florida's Election Lab reports that Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina - the battleground states- had record early voting turnout; each side has mobilized relatively effective early voting programs. The Democrats focused more on their get-out-the-vote campaigns, and the Trump campaign switched and incorporated early voting into the program where he previously stated skepticism as to the validity of these votes.

In some ways, the race has become more about this national attention surrounding the fact that it has brought everyone from afar to focus. Harris would energize younger, diverse voters as she's advocating for climate action, health care reform, and economic equity. For Trump, it is the old mixture of nostalgia with a focus on accusations that today's voting practices somehow make those who voted less fair: his message about the necessity to restore greatness to America.

According to the most recent pollsters, they say it is currently an even 50/50 split, and that, really puts into perspective exactly how competitive this race will be. Both candidates, of course, are pulling every stop out in order to secure every last vote as we know the margin that separates these two is incredibly razor-thin and virtually any shift at all, would make a huge difference.

The campaign has not been without its challenges, including recent assassination attempts on Trump, which he has leveraged to enhance his narrative of resilience and persecution. These incidents remind the public of the intense emotions surrounding this election and the stakes involved.

As Americans prepare to head to the polls, the combination of increased early voting and heightened search interest in polling locations signifies a deep commitment to participating in democracy. With the election just around the corner, it’s clear that every vote will count in what promises to be a historic contest.
