Microsoft reports that most services are back online after a widespread technical outage affected Outlook and Teams.
Microsoft has announced that the majority of its Outlook and Teams services have been restored following a significant outage on Monday, which disrupted many office workers worldwide. The company said that while most services were operational by the evening, full restoration is expected by Tuesday, with a few remaining issues still being addressed.
At the height of the outage, more than 5,000 user-reported problems were logged on tracking site Downdetector, although the company noted that the actual scale of the issue might have been larger. Microsoft confirmed that Outlook on the web remained affected for a small group of users, but the company was actively working to restore full functionality.
By Monday afternoon, Microsoft had rolled out a fix, leading to a sharp decrease in outage reports on Downdetector. The company initially estimated that the issue would be resolved within three hours, but progress was slower than expected for many users. By 2 p.m. ET, Microsoft acknowledged delays in its recovery efforts, though it continued to monitor and troubleshoot the situation.
Despite the technical difficulties, some U.S. users took to social media to joke about the unexpected break, as the outage occurred just before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. While Microsoft’s outage was significant, it was not as widespread as other major tech disruptions this year. For instance, the massive CrowdStrike software issue during the summer caused far-reaching effects, including halting air travel and disrupting hospital services.
The incident highlights the critical role of cloud-based communication and collaboration tools in today’s business environment. Microsoft’s swift response aims to reassure users that the company is working diligently to prevent future outages and ensure reliable service moving forward.
