Donald Trump's Proposals: Impact on CDC, FDA & Public Health

Trump suggests a radical shake-up of public health, including potential vaccine bans, with RFK Jr. in charge.

Former President Donald Trump has signaled openness to a major shift in U.S. public health policy should he win the 2024 election, specifically in regard to vaccines and other health regulations. In a recent interview with NBC, Trump indicated that he would consider implementing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s controversial proposals, including a potential ban on certain vaccines.

Kennedy, a prominent anti-vaccine activist and conspiracy theorist, has made it his point to oppose childhood immunization practices and has taken a misguided position that these vaccines induce autism. This claim has been scientifically proven wrong by every credible scientific body that exists. In recent weeks, he has also expressed worries about water fluoride levels, which have been shown to protect teeth by majority of scientists in the field.

Trump, who recently availed of Kennedy’s endorsement after he withdrew from the independent race, appreciated that Kennedy would be given “a big role” in his administration. When asked about policies that might change, Trump seemed to agree with Kennedy’s extremist views when he said, “I’m going to talk to him and talk to other people.. he’s a very talented guy and has strong views.” It is understood that should Trump be elected to the presidency, Kennedy will play an executive role in areas of public health with the potential to even be in charge of agencies such as the CDC and FDA.

Officials in Trump’s campaign have also shown readiness to endorse Kennedy’s unfounded notions regarding vaccines. Howard Lutnick, a senior Trump campaign adviser, claimed that Kennedy would “take on the data” regarding the vaccine safety data if he was able to see the safety data. This has alarmed health professionals who fear that such medication policies could reverse centuries worth of scientific medicine and incorporate unscientific principles.

The potential collaboration between Trump and Kennedy underscores the growing influence of anti-vaccine rhetoric within U.S. political discourse, which could have significant implications for the country's public health framework.
