India's retail sales increased by 5% in September 2024, led by North India

According to the latest Retail Business Survey conducted by the Retailers Association of India, or RAI, retail sales in India surged 5% in September 2024 from a year ago. North India recorded maximum growth at 7%, while West and South India were placed equally at 5%. East India remained low with 4% growth. This trend reflects the incongruous patterns of spending for consumers in different regions.

RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan said, the performance of this year's retail just was evidence of selective spending from customers, particularly before festival seasons. To align with shifting consumer expectations, retailers needed the flexibility to change their approach, he added. "The retail environment continues to prove supportive of growth and energizing consumer demand will prove essential for long-term success in the business," he said.

Food and grocery was 12 %followed by jewels at 8 % and consumer durables at 6%. QSR and apparel at 5 %registered growth. Others, who marked some growth, were footwear at 4 %and beauty and wellness at 2%. Footwear is grown only at 1%, but furniture dropped a bit to sell at a 1 %decline.

Compared with August 2024, which registered growth in sales only in 2%, the September sales reflect a stronger intent among consumers to spend in stores where they feel they add value. RAI is the apex body of retailers in India supporting the development of an environment conducive to the growth of modern retail.
