Leading the Charge in Green Tourism: The German National Tourist Board’s Ongoing Commitment
The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) has once again cemented its reputation as a global leader in sustainable tourism. In September 2024, GNTB was honored with Green Globe's Platinum status for the tenth consecutive year, boasting a remarkable 92% compliance score. This accolade highlights the board’s enduring dedication to environmental responsibility.
For over 70 years, the GNTB has been instrumental in promoting Germany as a premier travel destination. Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the GNTB, emphasizes that sustainability is now at the heart of their mission. “To genuinely position Germany as a sustainable destination, we must embody green practices in every facet of our operations,” Hedorfer explains. The GNTB aligns its initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring its practices reflect global sustainability standards.
In 2023, the GNTB adopted the European Commission’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), enhancing its environmental performance and sharing valuable insights with the global tourism industry. The GNTB’s green efforts extend to daily operations, including promoting public transportation among employees and offsetting carbon emissions through partnerships with organizations like Atmosfair.
Germany’s commitment to eco-friendly tourism is also evident in attractions like the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, known for its sustainable management and biodiversity. As the GNTB continues to push the envelope in sustainable tourism, Germany remains an inspiration for eco-conscious travelers, demonstrating that responsible tourism can coexist with memorable travel experiences.
