This merger comes amid a year of increased activity in the legal sector, with 29 law firm mergers completed in the first half of 2024
Kansas City-based law firm Lathrop GPM is set to merge with Silicon Valley's Hopkins Carley, marking a significant expansion into Northern California. The merger, announced on Wednesday, will officially take effect on October 1, 2024. As part of the deal, Lathrop GPM will gain 62 lawyers and two offices in Northern California, increasing its national presence to 13 offices and 360 attorneys. Operating under the Lathrop GPM brand, the combined company is expected to bring in about $250 million a year.
Lathrop GPM, which was formed from the 2020 merger of Lathrop Gage and Gray Plant Mooty, sees this new combination as a strategic move to strengthen its private client services and real estate practice groups. Cameron Garrison, Lathrop GPM's managing partner, hailed the success of the firm’s previous merger and emphasized the potential for growth in the "vibrant, thriving" Northern California market. Jennifer Johnson, managing shareholder at Hopkins Carley, highlighted the benefits of joining a firm with a national reach, stating that the merger "puts us on the map coast-to-coast."
This merger comes amid a year of increased activity in the legal sector, with 29 law firm mergers completed in the first half of 2024, according to Fairfax Associates. The industry has seen a steady rise in consolidation, reflecting a broader trend of law firms seeking to enhance their competitive edge through strategic partnerships.
