Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has spoken to the parents of deceased IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, assuring them of support as they seek justice for their son. The nearly 17-minute video call came as the family prepared for an indefinite hunger strike outside the IIT Bombay campus.
Gandhi spoke with Ravindra and Sonali Wakode while they were travelling from Washim to Mumbai. Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib and Maharashtra Congress Political Party chief Shivraj More were also present.
IIT Bombay said, “We apologise for the statements contained in our earlier communication concerning the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate demise of Sahil.”
Sahil, a second-year BTech student, died by suicide on September 18 after an incident during a mid-semester examination. Reports said he was allegedly found using a mobile phone during the exam.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has now taken over the investigation. Police have also urged people to avoid speculation and premature conclusions while the case is being examined.
Sahil’s parents have alleged caste-based discrimination and mental harassment. Those allegations remain under investigation. The Indian Express reported that the parents said Sahil had spoken to them about alleged casteist remarks before his death.
“We have full faith in the Crime Branch as well as the Constitution of India” said Sahil’s mother, Sonali Wakode.
Fresh CCTV footage has added another layer to the case. NDTV reported that its footage from the examination hall shows Sahil seated in the front row before a professor approaches him. The footage is now being examined as investigators reconstruct his final hours.
IIT Bombay has also formed a 10-member committee. A faculty member named in the FIR alleging abetment to suicide on grounds of caste discrimination has been sent on leave.
The institute has also apologized for its earlier communication about the incident, saying the circumstances surrounding Sahil’s death remain subject to investigation.
