Brad Lightcap has revealed that he is leaving OpenAI to start a new business enterprise. The departure of Lightcap comes as a result of the continuous series of exits of senior OpenAI leaders as the artificial intelligence company expands and prepares for a possible stock market listing.

According to the employee note released on Tuesday, Lightcap described his decision as bittersweet and said he will not be “going far.” In this case, Lightcap is expected to continue staying at OpenAI for some more weeks until the transition process is complete.

Lightcap has been working for OpenAI since 2018 and has eventually risen to become one of the senior leaders at the firm. For four years, he was the chief operating officer at OpenAI, working alongside CEO Sam Altman, whom he used to work with at Y Combinator.

From COO to Special Projects

Lightcap left the COO role in April and has joined a new role of special projects. Denise Dresser was appointed as the Chief Revenue Officer and took charge of Lightcap's previous responsibilities.

In the period of being the COO at OpenAI, Lightcap played an important role in helping expand OpenAI's commercial efforts. The organization responsible for commercial activities increased from 50 employees to more than 700. His departure comes amid a broader OpenAI leadership shake-up in 2026, with several senior executives leaving or changing roles.

Fidji Simo, who used to be one of the OpenAI executives, resigned last month due to health reasons. Others like Kevin Weil, Bill Peebles, and Srinivas Narayanan also resigned from their posts at OpenAI in connection with the consolidation of OpenAI's operations around core products.

OpenAI Faces Major Growth Expectations

Changes in the leadership come amid efforts from OpenAI to achieve an estimated $852 billion valuation and prepare for a possible initial public offering.

Lightcap was vague on specifics regarding his new venture. But when he says, “I’m not going far,” it could indicate that his future venture might still be related to the overall tech and AI environment. Business Honor believes Lightcap's exit highlights the scale of OpenAI's ongoing leadership transition as the company prepares for its next stage of commercial growth and potential public-market ambitions.
