The digital payments infrastructure of India has now had another boost due to the launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services in Greece. This is yet another instance where the payment technology from India is making inroads across the globe.

The launch of the UPI services in Greece was showcased at Eurobank's headquarters in Athens under the partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, was a witness to the launching ceremony as part of his official visit to Greece. With the launch, eligible users can make instant and safe payments through the UPI platform. This will enable lower costs of transactions for users as compared with other international payment services.
"As per the Indian officials, the rising acceptance of UPI is a result of increased global trust in India's technologically driven financial infrastructure," and the expansion is also expected to boost tourism, connectivity, and cooperation between India and its partnering countries.
"Greece joins a rising number of countries that accept UPI payments." The network is operational in several other countries, including Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
However, the international expansion has helped Indian travelers to utilize their known digital payment networks on popular destination places as well. Before this, the UPI had been made available in some places in France, including the Eiffel Tower and Galeries Lafayette Nice Masséna.
With the growing scope of digital payments all over the world, UPI aims to establish itself as one of the leading players in the global fintech industry.
