Duolingo's expanded China investment signals strengthened commitment to capturing edtech market share and driving international language education growth across Asia.
Duolingo, a U.S.-based platform for learning foreign languages, has dramatically increased its activity in China, one of their fastest-growing international markets, due to the rapidly growing need for students in China wishing to improve their ability to speak and write English so that they may pursue opportunities abroad. The edtech company's determination to accelerate growth in China is indicated by data on active Duolingo users learning English, which has increased more than 100% over the past few years.
China is one of Duolingo's top five global markets and one of the two primary markets for the Duolingo English Test (DET)—a computer-adaptive language proficiency test that universities around the world use to assess a person's ability to communicate effectively in English.
Alvarez remarked that "the return on investment is quite high," on top of that, he made clear Duolingo is committed to significantly increasing its financial investment in China—with plans to double its total local workforce in the next 2 to 3 years—ultimately positioning itself as a top contender within the competitive edtech landscape of China.
A completely different and game-changer method of teaching has come about through technology in education as well; digital learning (i.e., access to quality instruction through the internet) is now making it possible for everyone to receive a high-quality education.
Wang Chen (head of the China Growth for DET) explained that ultimately DET would continue to think of language learning and language testing as bridges rather than barriers for the purpose of building cross-cultural relationships and creating economic partnerships around the world. This way of thinking also connects with the growing understanding that if a person can speak a language of the neighbor country, then he or she can easily establish consistent commerce with them thus improving not only both of the economies, but also the entire global economy.
Business Honor is of the view that Duolingo's strategic China expansion represents a pivotal shift in the company's edtech market positioning and operational scaling capabilities.
