Cameroon Waste Management Recycling Sector Creates Jobs and Promotes Sustainability

- Sandra Kelembeth

Cameroon’s waste management recycling reform transforms scrap sites into safe, income-generating hubs while modernizing waste management systems and supporting a circular economy.

The scrap metal recycling program in Cameroon has brought about positive changes in the capital city of Yaoundé by turning more than 840 tons of scrap metal into something useful. The program, backed by the International Labour Organization, enhances security and provides a stable source of employment for more than 150 people.

The recycling program has seen an abandoned scrap yard transformed into a well-structured recycling facility through which 75 decommissioned vehicles have been recycled into almost 30 million CFA francs. This has been achieved in a secure environment where workers are provided with the necessary personal protective equipment and occupational health and safety training.

“Recycling of scrap metal in Yaounde is now transforming the waste material into a source of livelihood and better workplace safety, proving that the industry is capable of changing into an avenue of dignity,” said one of the project’s organizers. The employees noted the value that modern technology and safety had brought to the business.

Until recently, Cameroon’s recycling industry was poorly organized and not economically viable. However, through the application of the National Waste Exchange – which uses QR codes as its main tool – traceability and efficiency are ensured, bringing the industry up to international circular economy and ESG requirements.

Business Honor views that the above example demonstrates the power of structuring waste management and recycling projects. With the continued advancement of Cameroon’s efforts to apply digital waste management solutions, the industry is expected to develop further.
