PTSB Partners Red Hat for OpenShift Platform to Accelerate Cloud-Native Banking Modernisation

PTSB strengthens cloud-native banking modernisation with Red Hat OpenShift to enhance agility and customer experience.

In the Irish retail banking sector, PTSB has recently partnered with Red Hat to implement Red Hat OpenShift as part of its cloud-native banking modernisation initiative. This partnership is a part of the bank’s overall digital banking transformation in Ireland and enhances its strategy for enterprise Kubernetes adoption in the financial services industry.

As a result of the partnership, PTSB will integrate Red Hat OpenShift with its existing Red Hat solutions, including Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which are already in use at the bank. The cloud-native banking modernisation initiative has already helped the bank implement SEPA instant payments and improve digital card management capabilities. This expansion is a result of the increasing demand for hybrid cloud solutions in banks, modern banking infrastructure upgrade projects, and scalable platforms for real-time digital payments.

Tom Hayes, the Chief Technology Officer at PTSB, stated that “Red Hat’s technology has played a key role in enhancing the agility and efficiency of our digital, voice, and in-person channels.” He further stated that migrating microservices to OpenShift will help the bank’s microservices architecture in the banking sector in the long run and enable the bank to move ahead in developing secure cloud-native applications. Red Hat also confirmed that the PTSB bank plans to move a wide range of digital capabilities to the platform.

The PTSB bank was founded in 1816 and has become one of the major retail and business banks in Ireland. The partnership came after the bank’s involvement in the Red Hat Open Innovation Labs, where new mobile banking capabilities were developed. It also came after the PTSB bank’s partnership with Worldpay in 2024 to enhance business banking capabilities.
