The partnership intents to strengthen the U.S. silicon-anode battery manufacturing particularly for defense, aerospace, and energy storage needs.
Amprius Technologies, an innovator of next-gen lithium-ion battery technology, collaborates with Nanotech Energy to improve battery production in the U.S. and solidify the United States' standing for energy storage solutions, while developing a domestic safe manufacturing route for Amprius' high-performance silicon anode battery cells. This collaboration offers a distinct advantage to the defense, aerospace, and other sectors that require strict compliance with regulations governing secure sourcing. In partnership with Nanotech Energy, Amprius has improved its capability to supply NDAA-compliant lithium-ion battery cells without compromising on quality, performance and reliability.
The central piece of this partnership is Amprius’ SA128 silicon-anode cell, which provides an energy density of 320 Wh/kg and a capacity of 6.8 Ah. It is designed in a 21700 cylindrical arrangement. This allows for improved efficiency, lighter system designs, and longer battery life for demanding industrial and defense applications. Nanotech Energy has manufactured and supplied 18650 and 21700 cylindrical cells for commercial/industrial purposes and has experience in domestic lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing. The two companies worked together to show how nanomaterials can power battery innovations through the successful transition from laboratory development to mass production. Providing a greater advantage than either company could provide alone in improving both the design of the cells and the manufacturing processes.
As a result of this contract manufacturing strategy, Amprius's total production capacity rises to more than 2.0 GWh, creating a foundation for use within an increasingly safe, US‐developed energy storage system. L3Harris Technologies, a customer of both companies, illustrates the importance of establishing a dependable local supply chain. Collaborations like this one indicate that next-generation nanotechnology batteries for aerospace and defense will power the future as silicon-anode technology advances from research to practical deployment, providing lighter, stronger, and more intelligent energy solutions designed for the most advanced systems of the future.
