Nestlé Flags Political Pressure behind Slower Sustainability Push in US

CEO Philipp Navratil says ESG focus has faded among US investors, even as the company maintains its long-term social responsibility and climate commitments.

Nestlé’s Chief Executive Philipp Navratil has said that the group’s public emphasis on sustainability has ‘slowed down a bit’ in the United States. He blamed part of the problem on political developments under President Donald Trump. Speaking during a company event in December of 2025, Navratil said that ESG issues “have gone off the agenda” for U.S. investors, limiting corporate dialogue on sustainability.

Despite these challenges, Nestlé showed that its commitment to social responsibility and climate action does not waver, even as its Nestlé sustainability focus in the United States faces external pressures. The Swiss food giant is committed to net-zero emissions by 2050, with an interim target to halve emissions by 2030 from 2018 levels. It has already achieved a reduction of 20%, showing measurable progress in sustainable operations.

Navratil mentioned the significance of making greater progress in the areas of sustainable agriculture, resilient supply chains, and the livelihoods of farmers, adding that the initiatives fit well within the company's social responsibility ambitions. Nestle also pointed to its review of external initiatives, such as being a member of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance.

This is attributed to a trend known as “greenhushing,” whereby companies fulfill ESG goals but limit their communication to preserve their image against political pressure, according to experts. Though some companies have retreated on their environmental goals, Nestlé maintains its commitment to address all aspects as it grows.

As the pace of global warming heightens, the commitment of the firm to ESG principles and responsible business operations reflects the increasingly important role of corporate social responsibility in combating climate change and achieving sustainable economic growth.
