Nvidia introduces new software that helps users check where their GPUs are located, as worldwide chip rules and tensions increase.
Nvidia introduces new software, allowing users to verify the physical or virtual location of their AI GPUs. The information comes as the US government steps up its efforts to stop banned semiconductors from reaching countries like China. The system is optional and runs on a small software agent that customers install to monitor GPU health and usage. Nvidia announced that users can now look at their worldwide GPU fleets using a dashboard that shows how the chips are used, their IP addresses, and the data centers or cloud regions in which they are located. The business highlighted that the feature cannot operate or turn off any gadget. The tool just transmits data back to Nvidia and does not allow the business to take action on customer hardware.
The data sent, containing network addresses, time stamps, and other system information, can still reveal broad position. A screenshot from Nvidia showed IP addresses and geographical markers. Lukasz Olejnik of King's College London warned that Nvidia hasn't disclosed how the program finds location, and that the data might possibly indicate strange or suspicious chip use. The publication comes as US politicians call for more control over powerful AI devices. Senator Tom Cotton and a bipartisan group recently introduced the Chip Security Act, which would require security and location verification features in powerful processors. This comes after the US investigation on the smuggling groups that illegally transferred over $160 million worth of Nvidia GPUs into China.
China has additionally warned Nvidia not to add tracking features, causing local purchases of some products to slow down. Experts believe that these methods may lead to the beginning of a future in which every important AI chip is regularly examined and monitored to make sure it remains exactly where it is supposed to be.
