Cloud data provider Snowflake declared its intention to purchase Crunchy Data, a Postgres database partner. According to a person with knowledge of the situation the deal was valued at approximately $250 million. In an effort to bolster their core database products that support AI agents IT giants have been acquiring data startups for a number of years.
Last week, Salesforce strengthened its AI agent data management tools by purchasing the decades-old Informatica. Recently, Alation expanded its offerings by acquiring Numbers Station, enabling its customers to utilize AI agents capable of operating on structured data. Similarly, ServiceNow completed the acquisition of Data.World earlier this month, focusing on enhancing AI agent capabilities.
Crunchy Data provides businesses with essential tools to build and manage Postgres, an open-source, object-relational database system compatible with SQL and widely favored by developers. Established 13 years ago, Crunchy Data serves notable clients such as UPS, SAS, Moneytree, as well as public entities including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Through the acquisition, Snowflake will have the core technology needed to provide Snowflake Postgres, an enterprise-class PostgreSQL database, for its partners and customers, including Blue Yonder and LandingAI.
This agreement greatly strengthens Snowflake's database offerings. This technology will soon be accessible in private preview. Vivek Raghunathan, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Snowflake stated in a press release that the company's goal is to provide the most trusted and complete data and AI platform available.
He noted that the proposed acquisition of Crunchy Data further strengthens Snowflake’s position as a leading solution for enterprise data and AI. Raghunathan stated the vast potential of the market valued at $350 billion and highlighted growing customer demand for participating Postgres within the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.
