Truecaller’s new Message IDs use AI to verify SMS, boosting inbox safety and organization.
Truecaller announced a significant new update to its mobile app in the form of Message IDs, a feature that will help users sort vital messages from a cluttered SMS inbox full of spam Message IDs were created to optimize message organization and security using artificial intelligence (AI) and massive language models (LLMs), which detect and mark legitimate messages from verified businesses.
This machine learning-enabled feature is part of Truecaller's larger vision to reposition itself from a caller identification app to a full-fledged mobile communications platform. Message IDs feature has been introduced in India and 30 other nations with the ability to support multiple languages like English, Hindi, Swahili, and Spanish.
The feature is entirely device-local, that is, user data stays private and secure. It recognizes messages like OTPs, delivery receipts, booking confirmation, and bank SMS alerts, and shows a green check mark indicating the verification of the sender. Notably, Message IDs are accessible to everyone, even non-Premium subscribers.
Truecaller needs the "Read SMS" and "Display Over Other Apps" permissions to provide real-time alerts for urgent messages. Beyond verification, the app now pulls summaries of important messages, allowing people to quickly act — with each summary tagged as "AI generated."
This mobile app update not only introduces smarter inbox management but also increases user trust by separating legitimate businesses from spoofed senders. It is a reflection of an emerging trend of incorporating AI-powered features into daily mobile apps to improve user engagement and productivity.
The update also brings the iOS version of Truecaller up to speed with Android, following a recent API expansion that allows spam call blocking and real-time caller ID on iPhones — marking a significant leap in mobile app functionality across platforms.
