The North Dakota governor will focus on reducing regulations and strengthening U.S. energy dominance.

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday that North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will serve as the next Secretary of the Department of the Interior. The announcement was made during Trump’s speech at the America First Policy Institute Gala at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

On the other hand, about Burgum, Trump said, "He is a fantastic man to oversee the department responsible for managing the country's natural resources and public lands." He declared, "The tenure of Mr. Burgum would aim at reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, cutting down on waste, and roots out corruption within the department." He also mentioned how his administration intended to put an end to what he termed "child sexual mutilation," referring to heated debates over gender-related policies in the health and education sectors.

The former CEO of a software firm, North Dakota Governor Burgum is a self-made multi-millionaire who has garnered a reputation as a stalwart of energy policy. He ran his tenure in office on an agenda that highlighted increasing fossil fuel production and promoted less regulation. In the short time he has been campaigning for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, energy and natural resource issues were central pillars of his platform.

Although Burgum dropped out of the presidential race in December 2023 because he failed to qualify for the third GOP debate, he has since become a significant surrogate and booster of Trump. The governor came out in January 2024 and endorsed Trump before the Iowa caucuses, and his name had already been discussed as a potential running mate vice-presidential candidate in the vice-presidential slot, prior to this duty falling to Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Burgum’s appointment as Secretary of the Interior reflects Trump’s continued emphasis on energy independence and deregulation, with an eye toward promoting economic growth and national security.
