Passengers were safely evacuated as authorities investigate reported safety threat on board.
An Air New Zealand flight, coming from Wellington grounded in Sydney Airport on the night of 20th October after a reported security incident occurred. It landed safely at 5:40 pm. Emergency services, including the tactical operations unit, paramedics, and firefighters have rushed to the scene.
The plane, carrying 154 passengers, and crew members, landed and was searched upon arrival where no injuries were found. The passengers were later taken into a safe area as police along with sniffer dogs went on to check their luggage. Witness accounts indicate that the crew along with the authorities kept their cool which reduced the panic among passengers.
The airline said the incident saw the return flight, NZ-248, rescheduled to Wellington. "As for passengers, it is their understanding and 'deep apologies' over the disruption," Captain David Morgan chief operational integrity and safety officer added in this regard. "Naturally, passenger safety is always our number one priority".
According to the Australian Federal Police, investigations are currently ongoing while providing the public with a guarantee that there is no danger to the community. Air New Zealand agreed to fully cooperate with the investigation as the authorities try to clarify the details of the incident. The airline also looks into reviewing their security protocols to ensure safety to its passengers in the future.
