Escondido fire, SDG&E lithium-ion battery storage, Level 3 evacuation

A fire at SDG&E's battery storage facility in Escondido led to a Level 3 evacuation. Hazmat teams and firefighters responded promptly.

In Escondido, a Level 3 evacuation was prompted by a fire at SDG&E's battery storage plant. Teams from Hazmat and Fire Department arrived quickly.

On September 6, 2024, a significant fire at SDG&E's lithium-ion battery storage plant on Enterprise Street in Escondido necessitated a Level 3 evacuation. Emergency personnel immediately evacuated surrounding businesses due to the incident, which was classified as a first-alarm fire, and took preventative steps.

A loud alarm and smoke coming from a trailer at the SDG&E battery storage site were reported to the Escondido Fire Department. The fire was swiftly restricted by firefighters to one trailer, stopping it from spreading to more battery units.

However, just one of the building's 24 battery storage units was affected by the fire. No injuries were mentioned. SDG&E attested that the damage was minimized since their fire suppression systems fired up quickly. In order to protect both the neighborhood and their business, the corporation is presently working with first responders and looking into the source of the incident.

Throughout the evening, the Escondido Fire Department kept an eye on the situation to make sure all dangers were reduced. While the region is still being examined for any potential risks, cleanup operations are in progress.
