In a significant data breach, 2.7 billion records stolen from the U.S.-based data broker National Public Data have been released for free on the hacking site Breach Forums. The breach, first reported in April 2024, potentially exposes nearly every living American to risks of identity theft and fraud.
The stolen data, originally offered for sale on dark web platforms for $3.5 million by a criminal group known as USDoD, includes names, mailing addresses, Social Security numbers, and other personal details. However, the free dump does not include phone numbers and email addresses that were part of the initial sale. Founded in 2008 and based in Coral Springs, Florida, National Public Data specializes in background checks, sourcing personal information from public and nonpublic databases, court records, and other repositories. The company now faces four class-action lawsuits, including allegations of negligence and breaches of fiduciary duty.
