IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings giant, is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) fleet by 40% by 2024-25 as part of its commitment to a more sustainable supply chain. Currently operating approximately 100 EVs, including three-wheelers and trucks, IKEA's delivery fleet in cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune is already fully electrified. The company plans to extend this initiative to Mumbai, with Delhi NCR slated as the next major market for its EV-first approach.
The expansion aligns with IKEA's Zero Emission Delivery goals, which will require a significant increase in EV numbers to meet demand as the company enters new markets. Saiba Suri, Country Customer Fulfilment Manager at IKEA India, noted that while the exact number of additional EVs needed is still undetermined, the company anticipates a 40% growth in its EV fleet by 2025. IKEA has been an early adopter of EV technology, integrating it into its delivery operations since 2017-18. The company conducts rigorous internal testing before onboarding new EVs, which are then purchased by its logistics partners. IKEA's current fleet includes models like the Tata Ace EV and Ashok Leyland’s Switch, with further expansions planned.
Additionally, IKEA has installed EV charging stations at all its large-format stores, catering to delivery vans, customers, and employees. This move is part of a broader trend among consumer-facing companies, including Amazon and Flipkart, to adopt EVs for cost savings and carbon emission reduction.
