Acqui-Hiring: Founders and VCs See Unexpected Upsides in Acquisitions

Acqui-hires gain surprising benefits in pay and seniority, offering profitable opportunities for startup teams despite market challenges.

In today’s challenging venture capital industry, many struggling startups are finding a lifeline in acqui-hires—acquisitions primarily aimed at integrating top talent. While these deals often appear disappointing compared to founders' original goals, they can offer substantial benefits.

Acqui-hires, where companies buy startups to gain their team rather than their technology, frequently result in accelerated career growth and improved compensation packages. Nivas Ravichandran, an early employee at Frilp—which was acqui-hired by Freshworks in 2015—notes that such deals can propel former startup employees into senior roles much faster than traditional hiring processes. “The pay and equity are often better than if you join as a lateral hire,” Ravichandran says.

This trend is supported by industry experts like Sri Chandrasekar from Point72 Ventures, who highlights that acqui-hires often come in at higher organizational levels, such as level seven or eight, compared to the decade-long journey typical in large tech firms.

Moreover, acqui-hire deals frequently include substantial stock grants and extended equity vesting schedules for key employees, making them financially attractive. For instance, a founder recently acquired by a public company was offered a significant stock grant, compensating for a lower valuation of his startup.

Despite initial reservations about working in large corporations, many acqui-hires find rewarding long-term career opportunities, demonstrating the evolving nature of startup exits.
