The Kwara State FRSC urges residents to embrace bicycles for healthier, eco-friendly transportation.
The Kwara State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has called on residents to embrace bicycles as an alternate mode of transportation. This advice was given with the celebration of the 2024 World Bicycle Day, on the theme of "Promoting Health, Equity, and Sustainability Through Cycling".
Corps Commander Stephen Dawulung said that this activity had too many benefits - it helps achieve physical fitness and health and supports a healthy environment. Dawulung said cycling increases muscular strength, elasticity, and movement, thus improving weight control through calories burned. "It has good effects on psychological health because cycling reduces stress and anxiety, thus bringing down depression.
The use of bicycles is an environmentally friendly way of transport, and they should reduce carbon emissions. Bicycles are also cheaper than motorized vehicles. If the community embraced bicycles, they would make tremendous strides in environmental conservation and reduce the overall pollution from transportation in urban areas. According to the sector commander, cycling supports sustainable mobility in a society that encourages reduction of fuel-dependent transport.
However, Dawulung emphasized safety. He recommended wearing safety helmets and reflective clothes for better visibility, especially during low light hours. He further suggested that cyclists must follow the rules of traffic, use hand signals when appropriate, and not to be distracted to avoid accidents. According to him, safety is the primary means of ensuring benefits from cycling are maximized without risking harm.
The FRSC has urged increased use of non-motorized transport and represents a broader global call for sustainable and healthy transport solutions. Cycling enhances personal health, promotes environmental conservation, and reduces fossil fuel use in vehicles, thus ushering in a much healthier and sustainable society.
