McLaren SUV plans are moving ahead with a £500 million UK investment, a new factory and fresh models as the supercar maker targets stronger sales and profits.

McLaren to invest £500 million ($675 million) into its UK manufacturing and engineering operations as the British supercar maker prepares to launch its first McLaren SUV.
The plan includes a new UK assembly plant and the development of engines and transmissions in Britain. McLaren expects the expansion to create around 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032.
The move is much bigger than a new model launch. McLaren wants more cars on the road and stronger profits. Its sales fell to about 2,000 automobiles in 2025 from just under 3,300 a year earlier.
Can an SUV really change McLaren’s fortunes without changing what makes the brand special?
The company sees the new performance SUV as a key part of its growth plan. CEO Nick Collins said the vehicle would be built “in a McLaren way” and offer something different in the crowded luxury SUV market. McLaren has not revealed the launch date or detailed specifications.
That market has already changed the luxury car business. Lamborghini’s Urus has become a major part of its lineup, while Ferrari has introduced the Purosangue with limited production to protect its exclusivity.
McLaren is also changing how it builds cars. After cutting dealer stock, the company moved toward producing vehicles when customers place orders. The aim is to avoid heavy discounting and protect the value of its cars.
But is more volume the answer for a brand built around scarcity?
McLaren’s main shareholder, Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund L’IMAD, has committed £1.5 billion to the company over the next five years. The new McLaren UK factory and wider McLaren manufacturing plans form part of that push.
There is another sharp difference between McLaren and some rivals. The company has no immediate plan for a fully electric car. Collins said McLaren will build one when customers ask for it, arguing that demand is not there yet.
Is McLaren refusing the EV shift, or simply waiting for its buyers to move first?
Business Honor examines that McLaren wants the financial strength of a larger luxury carmaker while protecting the identity that makes its cars desirable. The McLaren SUV will show whether those two goals can work together.
