Baltic Sea Nations Plan Joint Drone Defence Task Force, Germany Says

Baltic Sea nations plan a joint drone defence task force to improve information sharing and strengthen responses to growing hybrid security threats.

The countries that are located near the Baltic Sea have decided to set up a joint drone defence task force in order to enhance their response capabilities against hybrid threats, which keep rising in number, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said in a statement on Friday. It is reported that the task force will be aimed at fast information exchange and quick response to any drone attacks.

The Baltic Sea region is surrounded by eight NATO countries and Russia. The security situation became tense after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, when some cases occurred that seemed to be the result of sabotage carried out against the undersea cable network and gas pipelines.

Addressing an event ahead of his talks with the Baltic Sea region counterparts in Flensburg, north Germany, Dobrindt stated that foreign countries were trying to destabilize the democratic, security and economic situation in Europe. Dobrindt warned that hybrid attacks could have a new dimension in the coming months.

Germany has heightened its attention towards drone security after an incident last month when a suspected bomb-carrying drone was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which is known to be a strategic logistics base for military airlifts.

No foreign government has been accused by German officials regarding this matter; however, there have been speculations that Russia could possibly be involved in the case. The latter country has denied the accusation and termed it a deliberate provocation.

The establishment of the task force shows that Europeans are also worried about the potential security threat posed by drones and hybrid operations. Coordination among Baltic Sea countries will allow exchanging information on time.
