Oracle Revokes Placement Offers at IITs, NITs amid Global Layoffs

Oracle Revokes Placement Offers at Premier Indian Colleges as Tech Giant Accelerates Global Workforce Restructuring.

  •    Oracle rescinded job offers across IITs, NITs, and premier Indian engineering institutions.

  •    Global layoffs affect approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, with India hit hardest.

  •    More than 50 placement offers withdrawn; full-time and internship positions cancelled.

  •    India's 12,000 affected employees receive minimal severance compared to US counterparts.

  •    Tech giant prioritizes AI infrastructure investments over workforce stability and hiring.

Oracle revokes placements and is no longer offering jobs to many or all of recent Indian graduates from prestigious universities, thus changing the way they hire as part of a major worldwide layoff. The company plans to terminate about 30,000 of its employees and, consequently, either present or future graduates are now uncertain about finding jobs.

What is driving Oracle’s shift in hiring and layoffs at this scale?

A number of premiere Indian Schools will be affected by this layoff, with placement cells at IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, IIT BHU and IIT Hyderabad also reporting cancellation of job offers. In some cases, placement cells are reporting that there were 2-5 rescinded offers from each of the institutions, while sources have suggested that there may have been more than 50 job offers rescinded across all institutions combined.

Oracle has launched a massive restructuring, with approximately 12,000 Indian employees to be impacted across various areas, such as cloud infrastructure, engineering, enterprise solutions, product development and operations. Development centres and support services have experienced particularly significant reductions, though the impact varies by department and region.

Which teams and roles are most affected by Oracle’s restructuring in India?

The Indian severance packages differ greatly from the American severance packages - leading to anger from the Indian employees that lost their jobs. In India, employees are given a formula for their severance package consisting of 2 months of the individual's salary for every year of employment + 20,000 rupees total in health care costs; therefore an individual with 5 years of employment would be entitled to 12 months’ worth of severance and 20,000 rupees worth of health care coverage per year of service.

Why do severance structures differ so significantly between countries?

The US employees received 4 weeks of severance pay for each year of service (up to 26 weeks total have been paid). The severance calculation for Indian employees consists of one month's pay for a notice period, plus an additional 2 months of pay as an ex-gratia payment, in addition to a 20,000 rupees total of health insurance coverage. Unused vacation pay and gratuity will not be included as part of severance calculation, they will be processed separately and calculated at the employees gross pay.

Oracle's decision to lay off employees comes because of their decision to focus on moving to cloud-based services and artificial intelligence. While Oracle has enjoyed strong financial performance, its management is focused on using the majority of its cash to invest in AI and related technology. Oracle's decision reflects the industry trend toward automation and streamlined operations.

What role did corporate restructuring and AI investment priorities play in these layoffs?

Employees across affected regions reported shock and frustration regarding the abrupt notification process. Layoff announcements were delivered via early-morning emails without advance warning or direct communication from managers, leaving workers with minimal time to process the news. Many employees lost access to internal systems immediately upon receiving notification, compounding feelings of helplessness and dismay.

Business Honor is of the view that Oracle's placement offer revocation signals a fundamental shift toward AI-centric operations and cost optimization priorities.
