Prof. Heidi Abrahamse and the team at the Laser Research Centre of the University of Johannesburg have developed a new delivery mechanism for liposomal photosensitizers to help increase the suitability of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of cancer by developing a new liposomal photosensitizer delivery platform. While current forms of PDT can be effective at killing cancer cells, there are some challenges associated with this type of treatment, as photosensitizing agents can be unstable in the circulation and do not reach the tumor very effectively.

The new approach uses liposomal nanocarriers to enhance drug stability during circulation and deliver the drug only when a light source is applied. This allows for highly targeted nanoparticle drug delivery while lowering side effects and increasing the precision of treatment. In addition to the new liposomal PDT treatment method, the study utilizes nanotechnology for precision oncology applications and provides insight from the disciplines of photomedicine and cancer biology. The research team has demonstrated that liposome-assisted PDT results in greater drug delivery to tutumors, mours, formation of significantly more reactive oxygen species in the presence of light and improved ability to kill cancer cells than current PDT treatments.

This study demonstrates the possibility of developing smart nanocarrier systems for site-specific cancer therapy and shows how nanoscale engineering can directly impact the effectiveness of cancer treatment. This platform also has the potential to change cancer treatment strategies through next-generation research into nanotherapeutics as a means of providing more precise and effective treatment options to all patients.
