Burkina Faso Advances Digital Transformation through Italian Investor Collaboration

Burkina Faso accelerates digital transformation via partnerships by increasing connectivity, improving health care, using drones, implementing energy solutions, and developing sovereign digital infrastructure systems.

The government of Burkina Faso has taken steps in advancing digital transformation and growing the digital economy of the country through collaborations with foreign partners. In one of its meetings, high-ranking government officers met with investors from Italy in order to discuss innovation in technology. The topic of discussion was innovation in technology in relation to improved connectivity in remote areas in Africa where there are no telecom zones. Improving connectivity ensures better access to critical services like health care and education.

Investors also shared innovative thoughts on AI-enabled health care centers, including recording and vaccinations, which will ensure better service delivery. Moreover, the investors have innovated in how drones can be used in service delivery and agricultural activities in remote places. The energy element was also not left behind in discussions. Both parties agreed that there should be sustainable solutions of solar power for telecom infrastructure to improve the digital economy in the region, which has poor energy access, especially in rural areas.

There have been efforts made in Burkina Faso to develop sovereign digital infrastructure and data storage capacities. This involves housing of data locally and improvement of government information systems. In encouraging the development of a digital economy in Africa, the government supported public-private cooperation. Moreover, there are initiatives geared towards developing digital capabilities as well as capacity building programs in order to develop talent locally. This is meant to ensure that there are many other opportunities as well as less dependence on foreign technology.

Burkina Faso is making strides to be one of the emerging countries in the field of technology-enabled economic growth in West Africa. According to Business Honor, such collaborations could play an important role in developing a sustainable digital economy.
