U.S. troops in Syria evaluated for brain injuries after drone strike; no group claims responsibility.
In a recent drone attack, U.S. forces stationed at Rumalyn Landing Zone in northeastern Syria were injured, with some personnel now undergoing evaluation for traumatic brain injuries. The strike, which occurred late in the day, caused damage to one set of facilities, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder. While no precise information regarding the drone's origin has been made public, Ryder stressed that taking preventative action successfully lessened the impact of the attack.
The current evaluation is being led by U.S. Central Command, which has not yet made any announcements regarding intentions to strengthen air defense or surveillance in the region. Approximately 900 American soldiers are currently stationed in Syria to aid local forces engaged in combat with the Islamic State. The strike occurs in the midst of escalating hostilities between Israel and Gaza as well as U.S. interests in the region, including paramilitary organizations supported by Iran.
As of yet, no organization has taken credit for the drone strike. Although there were no significant injuries reported at first, a closer look found some small wounds and some employees who had inhaled smoke. The wounded soldiers have been taken to an other place for further evaluation.
