Experts warn of increased risks due to climate change and international travel amid West Nile virus cases.
In the middle of the concerns over mosquito-borne diseases in Europe, eyes turned over to two cases of West Nile virus that have been reported in Spain and Italy. It typically starts with mild symptoms, which can lead to body aches, rashes, and vomiting as the virus is transmitted through mosquito bites. These indicators prompt health warnings for summer travelers.
The recent neighborhood cases in Seville and Modena were stressed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to highlight the potential for early transmission due to climatic conditions. The symptoms in Seville were reported as early as March, indicating an early arrival of transmission.
Italy confirmed its first locally acquired case of West Nile virus in 2024 in Modena, underscoring the virus's presence in the region. Earlier instances this year also highlighted the virus's spread, with cases linked to international travel and local mosquito populations.
The ECDC Director, Andrea Ammon, cautioned that climate change is exacerbating conditions for mosquito proliferation across Europe, increasing the risk of diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and zika. She emphasized that international travel from endemic regions heightens the risk of imported cases and local outbreaks.
As summer travel picks up, health authorities advise precautions against mosquito bites and monitoring for symptoms upon return from affected areas. Travelers to popular European destinations like Majorca and Menorca are particularly urged to take preventive measures against mosquitoes carrying potentially lethal viruses.
