The popular dating app Tinder has introduced a feature called Photo Selector that is powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
The purpose of the application is to help users choose the most visually appealing images for their accounts. Tinder says that their new function helps users find a match by selecting a variety of photos for them. They claim that this function eliminates the need to guess which photos are best.
To use the Photo Selector on Tinder, users need to take a selfie using the app and allow access to their device's camera roll. The AI feature collects images for the user to use on their profiles with facial recognition technology. Tinder's systems do not receive an upload of the user's camera roll during this curating process, which takes place on-device.
The AI technology selects ten selfies that it thinks will look well on a user's profile. The AI is trained using the knowledge Tinder has about lighting and composition for a good profile picture. The company suggests reducing the number of group images to avoid confusing matches about whose profile it is.
The AI has been trained on a variety of datasets to guarantee accuracy, inclusivity, and consideration of different demographics. This complies with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) guidelines set forth by Tinder. Additionally, the tool is made to exclude images that go against the rules, such as naked ones.
Tinder created the Photo Selector because a survey showed that young singles spend an average of 33 minutes picking their profile picture. The Photo Selector's objective is to shorten this time by removing doubt from the process of selecting the ideal photo. 52% of people in a recent survey by Tinder had trouble picking their profile pictures. A recent survey by Tinder showed that 52% of people had trouble picking their profile pictures. Additionally, 68% of participants liked the idea of having an AI feature to help them choose their photos.
Tinder's CEO, Faye Iosotaluno, is excited about using AI technology to help users with the challenges of online dating.
