Interview Insights with Elizabeth Alexander

Could you explain your core services and how your teaching approach helps children build strong reading skills from an early age?

Reading In PreSchool provides private tutoring through teachers who are trained in The Alexander Reading Method. The method serves as the foundation of our primary curriculum and provides a clear phonics-based scope and sequence for developing early reading skills. This multisensory, play-based approach is specifically designed with benchmarks to ensure children enter Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade ahead.

What makes the Alexander Reading Method unique, and how does it benefit young learners?

The Alexander Reading Method was developed through years of research into early literacy instruction and experience working with both young children and older struggling readers. When researching what is taught to children before 2nd grade—the grade by which they are supposed to read—and tutoring older, struggling children from the best schools in NYC, I learned important details that needed correction:

• Children often need additional support in Kindergarten to be prepared for 1st grade. Unfortunately, nothing is taught in PreK, memorization is taught in Kindergarten (K), and in 1st grade, students are expected to learn 3 grade levels of information.
• Older children struggle with letter sounds because schools teach multiple sounds for letters too early. Children need to learn one set of sounds until they are comfortable reading their first 100–200 words. Once they retain that information, they can learn new sounds for letters with multiple sounds.
• Schools teach children to memorize sight words before learning to sound out words phonetically. This creates a struggle, especially for children accustomed to memorization.
• My method is phonics first, but sight words are taught in a way that complements phonics rather than as memorized lists. Most phonics programs also miss key components that help children learn faster, including large fonts, color coding, multisensory tips that make learning fun and improve retention, and unique tips for tricky sight words that cannot be taught with rhyme. Additionally, 30% of children are right-brain learners and don't learn like everyone else. After 25 years of working with all types of learners, I developed a multisensory approach that informs much of how we teach through The Alexander Reading Method.

How Does Your Personalized Learning Model Help Improve Children’s Reading Outcomes?

By using The Alexander Reading Method’s multisensory approach, developing benchmarks that take children toward 2nd-grade reading levels, and giving them the individual attention they need during PreK, K, and 1st grade, our children read at higher levels than their peers who are not using this reading model.

How do you ensure consistent teaching quality across your educators and programs?

Our teachers are experienced and undergo intensive training in The Alexander Reading Method. They study the method, observe children, and begin teaching after completing the required training. This continues with bi-monthly check-ins with our teaching directors, along with progress and assessment reports to track children’s development.

Consistency is important because The Alexander Reading Method follows a defined scope, sequence, and grade-based benchmarks. We monitor children’s progress monthly.

If a child is not meeting our benchmarks, I personally become involved to determine how we can get them back on track. In our latest end-of-summer reports, 10 out of 350 students were behind our benchmarks. Five are now on pace, while the others started our program later than recommended.

We are very results-driven, but we also know how to avoid pressuring children by using a play-based model throughout.

What innovations or new initiatives are you introducing to enhance the learning experience?

Besides creating fun and unique materials for parents and educators, we continue to expand the resources surrounding The Alexander Reading Method so that families can use its principles in different learning environments. We have focused on a few new initiatives in recent years:

1. Developing a homeschooling model for parents to teach The Alexander Reading Method to their children.
2. Creating cartoon shows on YouTube for our letter learner students, featuring our letter characters in action to help children learn their letters faster. Our artwork features letters as mommies and babies because little children love relatable characters, especially their own parents. Our Starter Bundle offers letter learning with these characters, while the shows complement them and add more fun.
3. Developing a unique spelling curriculum for children who struggle in this area. We have a successful way of teaching spelling that will be released as a curriculum.

We hope to have these initiatives rolled out by January 2027. Parents can also book personal consultations with me at my home in The Hamptons.

Elizabeth Alexander, Founder and CEO of Reading In PreSchool, has dedicated her career to early childhood education, specializing in teaching young children to read. After years of teaching children ages 2.5 to 8 and studying Early Childhood Development, she spent five years researching reading programs in the U.S. and around the world.

Drawing on her experience and research, Elizabeth founded Reading In PreSchool and developed The Alexander Reading Method, which has become the foundation of the company's teaching programs.

Under her leadership, the company has grown from one state to seven U.S. locations, with online lessons offered internationally. Elizabeth continues to create innovative learning resources that inspire children to develop a lasting love of reading and learning.
